Standard 14 Committee Minutes: 10/29/2002

DATE:10/29/2002
TIME:3:15 to 4:45 PM
PLACE:W2-5 Conference Room
PRESENT:Sonya Lott-Harrison, Deb Rossi, Warren Berman, Marcia Epstein, Emilie Harting, Madeline Marcotte, George McCasland, Mark McCormick, Lynn Sutherland
  1. Self Study Design
    • Sonya relayed to the committee that the Self Study Design was "hot off the press." She will review it, letting us know if there is any new information contained within it that we have to take into consideration.
  2. Distribution of Materials
    • Minutes from last week's meeting were distributed. Madeline distributed a working annotated bibliography that listed all previously distributed materials. The committee will use this list to keep documents recorded and numbered to facilitate future discussions. In addition, Warren supplied the group with four audits. We logged these documents into our working bibliography.
  3. Discussion regarding 335 course descriptions
    • Emily reported on her conversation with Susan Peterson of the English Department, explaining how the English Department defines expectations of student outcomes in the 335 course documents. Further, she explained that faculty fill out course evaluations, which summarize and assess course effectiveness as part of an on-going assessment plan. Warren noted that, in order to receive state funding and to facilitate course transfers, all the Departments are required to produce such course description documents, which will be valuable sources (as well as the documents produced under the new curriculum development model) to us as we precede.
  4. Selection of programs for assessment
    • We discussed what criteria we should consider when choosing program audits to evaluate. It was noted that our charge only asks us whether current audit procedures are effective. We decided that a sampling of five programs audits would provide us with adequate evidence on which to base our assessment. Warren had earlier distributed four audits, which he selected as representative. We debated which program to use as our fifth sample audit and settled on Art and Art Photography, which, Marcia noted, has recently adopted creative assessment procedures. We justified our selection this way: these five audits offer us a diverse range of programs and chronology.
  5. Selection of Departments
    • We then moved to a discussion of which Departments to investigate. We settled on English, Math and Psychology, noting the size and importance of each of these departments to various programs.

Assignments for Next Week:
