Standard 14 Committee Minutes: 01/21/2003

DATE:01/21/2003
TIME:3:30 to 5:00 PM
PLACE:W2-5 Conference Room
PRESENT:Sonya Lott-Harrison, Deb Rossi, Warren Berman, Marcia Epstein, Emilie Harting, Madeline Marcotte, George McCasland, Elaine Taliareni, Joan Monroe, Lynne Sutherland
  1. Distribution of materials
    • #35 "Minutes of 1/14"
#36 "Possible Questions for Department Heads" by Emilie Harting

  2. Assessment of Student Learning
    • Sonya addressed the issue of student input in the action plan. She asked committee members to consider ways to include students in the assessment of student learning, specifically to ask students about how they perceive ways that they are evaluated, and how they understand and actualize objectives for a course. Sonya asked committee members to consider this issue and to bring ideas to the next meeting on 1/28.

  3. Date for College Community Forum for Standard #14
    • Deb reported that she requested a change in date for our forum to April 10. Deb has not yet received a reply. Deb will keep us informed but clearly stated that the date will be earlier rather than later. This creates a two month time frame to complete the work of the committee.

  4. Discussion of Ways to Carry Out the Action Plan
    • After extensive group discussion about how to determine the focus of small groups, and how to create mechanisms to develop uniform interview questions, committee members decided to divide into four groups, according to the categories determined on the action plan. Each group will meet during the week to address the following issues and bring a report to the next meeting on 1/28:

      1. What assessments need to be accomplished?
      2. What methods will be used?
      3. Are interviews required? If so, what questions are most appropriate?
      4. How are the guiding principles (Assessment of Student Learning, #33, p. 3) incorporated in assessment methods?

  5. Group Assignments
    • The committee divided into the following groups:
      1. Warren, Emily, George
      2. Lynne, Mark
      3. Sonya, Madeline, Joan
      4. Elaine, Marcia, Debbie, and Ruth

Assignments for Next Week:

  1. Meet in small groups and address questions stated in Item #2.
  2. Bring a report of small group activities to the 1/28 meeting.
