Standard 1 Committee Minutes: 11/22/2002

Present: Frank Alsis, Judy Davidson, Mardi Holliday, Jane Jacobs, Steve Jones, Susan Peterson, Mary Ann Quillen, Michael Stern

Tom Hawk, Vice President of Finance and Planning, and Jane Grosset, Director of Institutional Research, were guests of the committee. They answered questions about planning processes and how they articulate with the Mission Statement. The Strategic Plan, which is developed every three to five years, delineates the most important things for the college to focus on in the next few years. The Strategic Planning process specifically begins with the Mission Statement. Other major plans, such as the Technology Plan and Facilities Master Plan, deal with implementation of aspects of the Strategic Plan. Planning that takes place at the departmental level may be more loosely tied to the Mission and Strategic Plan.

Tom and Jane discussed the quality of the Mission Statement from a planning perspective. It works well, but could also address the College's commitment to innovation and responsiveness. There was some discussion of "unit review" processes, which are called for in Strategic Principle 4. Planning for the new administrative computer system (Oasis) has made it necessary for all units to look at their operational processes, which has been a good first step in looking at each area's operations.

At our next meeting, we will speak with Lynette Brown-Sow, Vice President for Communications and Government Relations, on how the college communicates with external constituencies. We reviewed some questions developed by Frank Alsis relating to this area.

The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, December 13, 2002 at 11:30 am in the Counseling Department Conference Room, W2-2.
