Middle States Musings
Spring 2003 Edition

Middle States is Coming!
The College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and every ten years it must apply for reaccredidation. That process is going on this year and next. You will be hearing more about this process in the coming months and will be invited to participate.

Self-Study Design
The Middle States Accreditation (MSA) Process requires that the College engage in a reflective, self-study process and has approved several methods for this undertaking. Middle States has also defined the standards, which reflect an institution's excellence and these standards are the framework of the Middle States accreditation process. In conducting our self-study, we have chosen a "Selected Topics" approach, which means that we are looking at several standards in depth and providing documentation regarding all other standards.

The Selected Topics
The committees below comprised of College constituents (full time and part time faculty, administrative and classified staff) are exploring the selected topics:

Mission, Goals and Objectives Standard Committee, Co-Chaired by Judy Davidson and Stephen Jones
This committee is responsible for considering issues related to the College's mission and how well it is reflected in the College's goals and objectives and other undertakings.

Planning, Resource Allocation and Institutional Renewal Standard Committee, Co-Chaired by Donald Bowers and Francesca DiRosa
This committee is responsible for reviewing the status and congruence of the College's planning processes in areas such as strategic planning, technology and marketing.

Institutional Assessment Standard Committee, Co-Chaired by Ji Gao and Barbara Spadaro
This committee is considering the methods used for institutional assessment with respect to their effectiveness.

Student Support Services Standard Committee, Co-Chaired by Thomas Ott and Elizabeth Speakman
This committee is considering the range of student support services offered by the College with respect to the relationship of those services to various considerations such as the College mission, accessibility, flexibility and student rights.

General Education Standard Committee, Co-Chaired by Cynthia Giddle and Marian McGorry
This committee is considering the College's efforts with respect to general education and considering the effectiveness of current general education requirements in assuring student proficiency.

Assessment of Student Learning Standard Committee, Chaired by Deborah Rossi
This committee is determining whether or not students develop knowledge skills and competence consistent with the goals of our college and higher education as a whole.

The Documentation Committee, Co-Chaired by Ralph Faris and Dennis McGrath
This committee is responsible for reviewing documents related to the standards which are not a focus of the Self-Study.
