The College Foundation held another successful golf tournament on June 8, 2009, at the Torresdale Frankford Country Club. Even with a short rain shower, 86 golfers enjoyed the warm weather, beautiful grounds and competitive course.
The first place prize went to the Schultz and Williams team, but students are the big winners. Thanks to the generous support of everyone who attended, the 2009 golf tournament netted more than $36,000, which will help fund student scholarships and programs at the College.
After an afternoon of golfing, the competition was not over. Tournament attendees had a chance to outbid each other on fabulous silent auction items like jewelry; an Orlando, Florida vacation package; and a baseball signed by Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels. The silent auction earned more than $1,100.
Each year, one of everyone’s favorite moment occurs during the golf tournament’s dinner program. It is the chance to hear directly from a Community College of Philadelphia student about what donors’ support for the College really means. This year, Foundation Scholar and Nursing student Carl Laguerre moved the crowd with his personal story of how the College is not only providing him with an excellent education, but also with hope for a better future.
