The College showed its appreciation to 38 employees for their long and loyal service on May 27 at the 24th Annual Classified and Confidential Employees Luncheon in the Bonnell Cafeteria. The honorees were cheered and applauded by their fellow staff as President Curtis congratulated those who had between five and 40 years of service. He also presented the 2008 Employee of the Year Award to Vivian Collick, who received an American Express gift certificate and a half-day off.
A group of 19 Community College of Philadelphia student leaders attended the National Conference on Student Leadership
in Atlanta, GA from March 29 to April 1. Jenavia Thompson Weaver, assistant director for Student Leadership and Involvement, chaperoned the group and presented. The College’s Philadelphia L.E.A.D.S. Student Leadership Society’s Food Stamp Enrollment Program was recognized as one of the top three programs among 50+ colleges attending the conference. The program received the Trendsetters Award.
The Career Services Center hosted the College’s 3rd Annual Best Practices in Higher Education Conference, Energizing Career Services for the 21st Century, on April 18. President Curtis spoke to conference participants about his children’s career issues and how each of them used services and arrived at their careers in different ways. Some 83 representatives from 10 community colleges, 30 four-year colleges and universities and several private firms attended the conference.
More than 100 bidders vied for 200 in-kind donations auctioned for the College Foundation’s 3rd Annual Online Auction. The auction raised more than $12,300 to benefit students. Bargain hunters from as far away as California and Ohio bid on a variety of items ranging from lunch with President Curtis to concert tickets and gift certificates for a zip line tree canopy adventure tour.
The Alumni Association bus trip to Atlantic City’s Showboat Hotel and Casino in March was a sellout and raised more than $300 for student scholarships.
