Mayor Appoints Eight to the College’s Board of Trustees

Mayor Michael A. Nutter appointed eight people to the 15-member Community College of Philadelphia Board of Trustees effective April 1.

The appointees include Matthew Bergheiser, executive director of University City District; Helen Cunningham, executive director of the Samuel S. Fels Fund; Stacy E. Holland, co-president and chief operations officer for the Philadelphia Youth Network; Harold A. Honickman, chairman of the Canada Dry Delaware Valley Bottling Co.; Philadelphia City Councilman-at-Large James F. Kenney; Dorothy Sumners Rush, a retired educator and former vice president of the Philadelphia Board of Education, who has served on the College’s board since 2000; Lydia Hernández Vélez, Esq., executive director of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; and Gilbert A. Wetzel, partner, the Mayer Leadership Group and a College board member since 1993.

“Community College of Philadelphia is a leader in educating our city’s young people, in supporting adults who seek to return back to college and in creating a competitive workforce for Philadelphia,” Nutter said in a statement. “I am privileged to be able to contribute to the mission of this vital institution by appointing members to the board who have demonstrated their commitment to education and job training in Philadelphia.”

The remaining seven board members are George E. Davis, retired senior vice president of Human Resources for Lincoln Financial Group; Varsovia Fernandez, president and CEO, Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Sallie A. Glickman, CEO, Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board; Rhonda R. Cohen, Esq., former partner, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP; State Rep. James R. Roebuck, Jr., 188th Legislative District; Jeremiah J. White, Jr., chairman, Osiris Group, Inc.; and Marcellette Wise Ellison, Business Partner, New Products, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

Board terms are six years. Board members serve without compensation and meet monthly. The newly constituted board is chaired by Davis. Fernandez and Wetzel are vice chairs and Sumners Rush is the secretary.
