PHILADELPHIA, July 21, 2011—CCPTV (Comcast Channel 53 and FIOS Channel 21), the educational cable channel for Community College of Philadelphia, has won a Telly Award for a video short on cell-phone etiquette in the classroom.
The eight-minute “Classroom Etiquette” video was chosen from among nearly 11,000 entries from all 50 states and numerous countries to receive the Bronze Telly Award in two categories: Education for Academic Use and Low Budget Production.
Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and web commercials, videos and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators and corporate video departments in the world. The best work in a variety of categories receives a Silver Telly, the highest honor. Other outstanding work is awarded a Bronze Telly. Winners this year include Lockheed Martin, the Miami Dolphins, Harpo Studios, the Golf Channel, PGA Tour Productions, Hasbro, Elvis Presley Enterprises, ESPN and the New York Jets.
CCPTV produced the Classroom Etiquette video as a project for the College’s 2010 Leadership Institute. “It was actually an alternate idea that came about to address the issue of deportment on the College campus, particularly in the College classroom,” said Allan Kobernick, the College’s director of Multimedia Services and producer of CCPTV.
The film simulates an interaction between a teacher and some students regarding cell phone use and proper behavior in the classroom. It is shown during orientations for incoming students.
Credits for the film include: Sharon Thompson, executive producer; Kobernick, producer and director; Robert Dauval, director of photography and editor; Assistant Professor of English Kirsten Quinn, screenwriter, video coordinator, casting director, actor and narrator; Constance Dauval, assistant camera; Richard Gilbert, audio; Joseph McFadden, tech support; and Gary Grissom, webmaster.
The student actors in the film include Danielle Rae Bradley, Semaj Fisher, Mike Moore, Dina Palermo, Tanisha Saintvil, Hai Do, Adam Gregory, Noble Prince Hart, Sirmarquis Kane, Nicole Lackey, Arik Latimer, Mary Therese Laub, Dominique Morris and Ann Cheryl Watkins.
Several Community College of Philadelphia students and interns also were part of the crew. Quinn wrote the script in collaboration with participants from the College’s Leadership Institute, and along with several students.
The Leadership Institute is a professional development program for the college’s faculty and administrators. A new group of participants is selected annually, and each is responsible for creating and completing a project by the end of the year. Members attend monthly sessions designed to build both individual and organizational capacity.
