Pennsylvania’s community colleges are offering brief courses to train unemployed and underemployed workers for the new jobs that are in demand now. Some courses can be completed as quickly as a few weeks to several months. Through a federal grant, community colleges have developed quick course programs that lead straight to the “jobs of today” in Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and Health Information Systems Technology.
 
These programs are ideal for displaced workers, veterans and anyone else looking to change careers in a short timeframe and wants to qualify for jobs as:
Heating, A/C and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers
Plumbers, Pipefitters and Steamfitters
Maintenance and Repair Workers
Construction Trades & Extraction Workers
Mechanics, Installers & Repairers

Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technician I Specialized Diploma Program
Participants will gain an understanding of mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair practices commonly used in the AC/R industry. This specialized diploma program combines hands-on training experiences with practical classroom knowledge to enable students to rapidly learn modern, high demand air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance skills.
Individuals seeking to enter a career in HVAC/Refrigeration
Commercial/residential maintenance technicians
Mechanically inclined individuals seeking new skills and knowledge
Mechanical contractors and equipment repair technicians
Facilities personnel wishing to cross-train and broaden their versatility
 
Geothermal Heat Pump Technician I Specialized Diploma Program
Participants will gain an understanding of the mechanical and electrical installation and repair practices commonly used in the HVAC industry. This specialized diploma program combines hands-on training experiences with practical classroom knowledge to enable students to rapidly learn modern, high demand geothermal air conditioning and heating installation and maintenance skills. This program is ideal for:
Individuals seeking to enter a career in the HVAC industry
Commercial/residential maintenance technicians seeking to upgrade their heat pump systems knowledge
Mechanically inclined individuals seeking new skills and knowledge
Mechanical contractors and equipment repair technicians
Facilities personnel wishing to cross-train and broaden their versatility
 
Electrical Construction | Specialized Diploma Program
Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the most current electrical construction practices and code requirements. This specialized diploma program combines hands-on training experiences with practical classroom knowledge to enable students to rapidly learn modern wiring practices; including the specialized skills associated with the installation of solar PV(photovoltaic) systems.
This program is ideal for:
Individuals seeking to enter a career in electrical construction
Commercial/industrial maintenance technicians, including solar PV maintenance
Electrical contractors and equipment repair technicians
Facilities personnel wishing to cross-train and broaden their versatility
 
Mechanical Systems Maintenance: Machinery Repair | Specialized Diploma Program
Participants will gain an understanding of mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair practices as they apply to a wide range of industrial machinery and plant equipment. This specialized diploma program combines hands-on training experiences with practical classroom knowledge to enable students to rapidly learn modern, high demand industrial maintenance skills.

The program also includes supportive training which focuses on the basic writing, computer and math skills necessary for success in trade careers. This program is ideal for workers with backgrounds in:
Industrial maintenance mechanics and millwrights
Maintenance apprentices
Equipment repair and service contractors
 
Getting Started:
Sign up for an information session in October or December to begin enrollment for the Spring semester. Prospective students are given a 45-minute tour of the facilities and are given time to speak with program support staff and PA CareerLink specialists prior to enrolling.
